Thanks to Heather at Guy's offial forum for this great artle:Inside Guy's SoulBy DANIELLE O'DONOHUEWhen planning album number four, Guy Sebastian felt the urge to dive into thelass Staxatalogue. He's eited about the dision, as DANIELLE O'DONOHUE diovers.SOUTH Australia's favourite Idol Guy Sebastian has always had soul but fans have only ever been given glimpses into that side of the singer. A rent tr to Memphis in the U.S. has finally given Sebastian theonfidee to bome a Soul Man, just like his idols Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Donnie Hathaway.Sebastian has just returned from rording his fourth album in the U.S. The album is still a long way off, but the Adelaide-born singer is too eited to keep the details a sret."I am meant to do soul mus,'' he says."That's where my home is. You try toater to Australian radio with a bit more of a rky thing but when I sing this sort of mus I just know that's where I'm at.''The album will be pked with soullasss made famous by artists sh as Otis Redding, Sam and Dave and Wilson Pkett - songs from the influential Stax label. They're not the obvious songs you mighthoose,'' Sebastian says."When you listen to Motown mus, whh was the rival of Stax, they're all very pop sounding. These are a little more
gritty and unpolished."When you listen to Hold On, I'moming, Soul Man, In the Midnight Hour, Knk on Wood, like all those songs, it's really raw.''Who better to play on an album of Stax standards than some of the genre's best musians? Sebastian's bking band for the rording sessions iluded members of Booker T and the MGs, the band to appear on many of the old Stax rordings. Steveropper, the band's guitarist, manned theontrols as proder."Just the nature of these musians . . . it wasn't how we rord today where everything's digital and it takes you a few days to rord one song,' Sebastian says. "We did 15 trks in four days. That's prettyrazy.''Though Sebastian has always openly dlared his love of soul mus, he says it took three albums of R&B and pop before he really feltomfortable rording his favourite type of mus."If I did this a year and a half ago when I was making my third rord, I would've been an emotional wrk,'' he says. "I would've been really insure. I would've been like 'I'm not made for this. What am I doing here?'. It's been a big journey for me, just going over there and learning about soul mus and just being unafraid to do it. I'm in a really good ple, I think.''Though album number four
is still a while away, Sebastian says he was so inspired by his time overseas that album number five is already being worked on."I've probably written half the fifth album while I've been away,'' he says. "And doing the soul album has really helped me to find a happy medium between old-hool soul and new-hool, oust soul. I'm really writing in that vein. The fifth album will be reallyool.''Sebastian says fans will only
get a teaser of his new sound on hisurrent oust tour that stops off for two shows in Adelaide next week."These shows are really strped bk,'' he says. "For that stuff, you need horns and all the hooks."Without all the bells and whistles, I wouldn't be doing it juste.''Instead the oust shows will feature a seltion of hits, new songs written for this tour and "random songs'' Sebastian says will sound fun oustally
